A mage and a warrior face off against a dragon.

This is the Celerity ruleset, written to create a fantasy world that allows multitudes of varied options for the players, and at the same time, keep those options balanced against one another while maintaining a healthy degree of verisimilitude.

Similar to other d20 roleplaying systems, Celerity operates by the DM describing the events occuring in the game world, and the players choosing how their characters would react to those events. The outcomes of those actions are often decided by rolling a 20-sided dice, or a d20.

To begin playing, you need to create a character.

Steps of Character Creation

1. Choose your race & class

Pick a race & a class. Each race has their own unique racial adjustments to abilities, languages they are automatically proficient in, and possibly other special qualities. Each class represents a fantasy archetype of an adventurer.

2. Determine your ability scores.

Every creature has six different stats that govern its natural prowess at doing things. The six abilities are: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. Stat of 10 in the ability represents what an average human would have. Your character's ability scores will be generated by the point-buy method. Your stats will start at 8, and you are given 28 points to spend on your abilities. The point-to-stat conversion is in the table below.

Table: Ability Score - Point Buy Table
Ability Score Modifier Point Cost
6 -2 -2
7 -2 -1
8 -1 0
9 -1 1
10 0 2
11 0 3
12 +1 4
13 +1 5
14 +2 6
15 +2 8
16 +3 10
17 +3 13
18 +4 16

3. Select skills

Every character is trained in different skills. Determine the number of skill ranks your character has based on his class and Intelligence modifier. Then, allocate these ranks to your desired skills. Your maximum number of ranks in a class skill is equal to your character level + 3, and in a cross-class skill, it is half that.

4. Select feats

Every character has a special feature. You get a feat at level 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18. You may get additional bonus feats depending on your class and/or your level. Some feats have prerequisites, which means your character must have the indicated ability score, class features, feat, skill, base attack bonus, or other quality designated in order to select or use that feat.

5. Select equipment

Each new character starts the game with an amount of gold based on his class, that can be spent on equipment and gear.

6. Decide background information

Where did your character come from? What did he/she do before becoming an adventurer? What is his/her personality like? What are his/her goals?
